Brief History:
The Britton and Jones Families are linked through the marriage of Mary Britton to Samuel Jones in 1809. The name Britton is also recorded as Britten in many of the family papers and records. Mary Britton is the daughter of Joseph Britton of Washington and Hawkins Counties Tennessee. Joseph was a Revolutionary War veteran who had lived in Maryland in the 1780's and then moved to Washington County Tennessee about 1788. Recent records confirm his parents as Abraham and Rebecah (Van Sandt) Jones and his grandparents as Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Garretson) Britton of Staten Island New York. He is married to Margarette Jones in 1784 in Baltimore County Maryland. They will have eleven children of which Mary is the fifth. Joseph will later move the family to Hawkins County Tennessee near Beech Creek. Our earliest family document is a handwritten genealogy by Joseph Britton in 1822 and a handwritten letter from Joseph Britton to his daughter Mary, her husband Samuel Jones, and his son William Britton in Clark County Ohio in 1824.
